Pike County, Arkansas
Arkansas
Founded in the heart of Pike County — a town rooted in resilience, community, and opportunity since 1904.
Our Story
Long before incorporation, the area was home to the Quapaw people and later to early settlers who built their lives along Wolf Creek. By 1832, a post office known as "Wolf Creek" connected the growing community to the wider Arkansas Territory.
In 1873, the land that would become Delight was purchased and eventually donated as a town site by William H. Kirkham, a Confederate Army veteran. When the railroad arrived in 1895, it sparked excitement and new opportunity. Kirkham described the area as "such a delightful place to live," and the town proudly adopted the name Delight. The town was officially incorporated in 1904.
The railroad ushered in an era of industry. Sawmills, timber operations, gravel shipping, merchants, physicians, and farmers all helped shape a thriving local economy. Like many American towns, Delight weathered the hardships of the Great Depression — but never lost hope. By 1937, the return of the lumber industry brought renewed growth and prosperity.
Delight's most celebrated son, Glen Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, just outside of town. One of twelve children raised in Pike County, he went on to become one of the best-selling music artists of all time — a guitarist, singer, and television personality whose hits like Rhinestone Cowboy and Wichita Lineman made him a household name around the world.
"That little town gave me everything I needed to go out and face the world."
The welcome sign at the edge of town bears his image proudly — a reminder that greatness can come from anywhere, even a small town of 288 souls in the Arkansas hills.
The City Council meets the second Monday of every month at 7:00 PM at the Carmen Hendrix Building.
All residents are welcome to attend.
